Many thanks to Melanie and her staff for a wonderful show! The show will remain up until June 2, so there's still time to visit!

Many thanks, also, to Bev Abbott, the judge of the show and an accomplished miniature artist! It's always such a great feeling when an artist whom you admire selects a piece for special recognition. I loved this piece, and it was hard to part with. Below is Bev's Judge's statement about "Kindred Spirits":

"The show has been a joy to judge. There are many wonderful pieces to exclaim over. When judging a miniature painting or sculpture, besides the usual qualities of composition, etc., I look for detail and a refinement of technique and emotion. The piece should be able to be enlarged and still hold its quality.

Best Oil/Acrylic:

"Kindred Spirits", oil by Luann Houser

This is a sensitive oil with excellent attention to detail, highlights and shadows. The color balance is harmonious. The reflected light on the man from his horse’s nose is smoothly painted to blend his expressive face into a wonderful whole. The emotion in tis painting is overwhelming and rarely portrayed this well." (Bev Abbott)

Formal Portrait, Dr. Thompson's Grandparents

Final size of painting is 18 X 24, oil

Here is the photo of Dr. T's Grandfather I had for reference

Here's the photo of Dr. T's grandmother that I started with...

I composed the painting like a traditional Japanese portrait. I added a body on Grandfather, sat Grandmother on a chair, chose a different kimono (silky texture, peach for the color, with hand-painted flowers). I also reasearched traditional hairstyles, and chose a simple, but more elegant upsweep.
I researched the samari outfit for the Grandfather.
I painted this in black and white first, then added color as I developed the painting.
